Sam Smith Will Pay Tom Petty Royalties For "Stay With Me"

Sam Smith is going to pay the iconic singer Tom Petty royalties from his track "Stay With Me."

The decision came after Petty, 64, and his collaborator Jeff Lynne, 67, figured out that the song was very similar to their hit "I Won't Back Down." They approached to Smith's reps and both camps reached an agreement amicably.

"Not previously familiar with the 1989 Petty/Lynne song, the writers of "Stay With Me" listened to "I Won't Back Down" and acknowledged the similarity," Smith's rep said in a statement to Billboard, adding: "Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement in which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are now credited as co-writers of "Stay With Me" along with Sam Smith, James Napier and William Phillips."
