Lisa Stansfield Quotes

1. I work out with weights, do yoga and run on the treadmill at the gym. And if it's fine, I take our dog for a long walk.

2. (on Simon Cowell) He's done a lot of people a favor in the music business. Since these shows happened all that corporate bull***t has been broken down and there are not as many big-label signings.

3. The political world is now so nondescript it's ridiculous. Put it this way - I'm not writing any more cheques for anyone.

4. I'm not the sort of person who if everyone thinks you're fabulous you thrive on it.

5. I try to keep healthy, although I have probably knocked five years off my life already, smoking 30 cigarettes a day since I was 15. Every couple of years I have a check-up, and get told off for it.

6. I'm proud to be a woman. I feel a lot stronger, a lot sexier and I think that all of that is reflected in my music.

7. Fame made me insecure and insular. I wanted to run away from being me.

8. It's not worth being with a big label anyway - they take 85 per cent of your money and just sit there while you do all the work.

9. Thanks to Ginkgo Biloba, an antioxidant which keeps you young, I still feel 20 years old.

10. I needed to learn to f**king sit back and enjoy my life. It took me 10 years to realize that and get myself straight.

11. A few years ago I developed horrible mouth ulcers. They were so bad that I could eat nothing but soup and other bland food. I longed for salt and vinegar crisps or a bacon sandwich, but anything salty, acidic or alkaline was just too painful. I went from hospital to hospital in search of a diagnosis. Eventually, after nine months, tests at Guy's Hospital in London revealed I had developed an allergy to my own saliva. No cause was given. But after a week of gargling with antibiotics, it had gone. By then my weight was down to seven stone, so I went on an eating bonanza. In four or five months I had put on a stone, and was back to my normal shape. I still managed to sing, even when I was ill. But then, nothing has stopped me from singing - even when I had problems with my tonsils as a teenager. Then, I had gone to a specialist and he couldn't even find my tonsils. He actually asked when I'd had them removed. Then he had another look and finally conceded: "Oh, yes. They are there. But they are tiny, like two little lentils." In his view, I had "killed" my own tonsils by singing the wrong way - from my throat, not my diaphragm.

12. When I finally took stock of what I'd done it was a massive shock. I remember thinking "F***ing hell, you've done all right". But I didn't have time to think about what I'd achieved while I was in it. You get one award after another and say "thank you" and say you're really appreciative - but you aren't really because you don't get the gravitas of what you've done and can't believe it.

13. Let's face it, I have a fun job at the end of the day.

14. I'm glad the "Indecent Proposal" thing came out the way it did… It would have thrown me right at the deep end. But it was a shame about "Four Weddings and a Funeral." They really wanted me to do it, but our schedules just didn't work. I was doing an album at the time.

15. As a rule I start the day with a delicious health cocktail which includes soya protein powder, porridge oats, water, vitamin C, sunflower seeds and honey, plus Dr Udo's Ultimate Oil Blend for all the essential fatty acids your body needs.

16. I admire her so much. She's a brilliant writer and a wonderful singer. I'd love to meet her for a chat.

17. I gave up everything and nearly became a f***ing farmer, walking around in headscarf and wellies for 10 years to find my confidence again.

18. These days I always sing from my diaphragm, and only two things affect my voice - dairy products and lack of sleep.

19. (on Madonna and Kylie Minogue) I can't believe how relentlessly they have worked. I couldn't have done it.

20. The fame thing made me run - it got out of hand and I needed to go away.

21. When a dance artist gets in the national Top 20, the dance market drops them, and what's really amazed me is the fact that so far I've managed to bridge both markets.

22. You get into a role and people see you as that character, so they'd be confused because they know me as Lisa Stansfield. It would freak them out if I was pulling pints at the Rovers.

23. For a sore throat I take arnica, just a tiny pill dissolved under my tongue. And because your throat is like a muscle, I keep mine warm drinking herbal teas, usually camomile.

24. I've always been political but I don't like to bring it into my work any more because I think it limits me.
